First After Second

This should have been my first post, not my third. The one that tells you right away that I am not a writer. I struggle with how to arrange words and thoughts into cohesive sentences. I can't spell, I suck at grammar, and my knowledge of punctuation is very limited. It's very hard work!

I've been working on a — rant/letter/viewpoint/blog — about the switch to digital TV. I refuse to pay for television and so I'm one of millions that will be screwed over when the switch happens. I'm pretty pissed-off about it and I'm trying to articulate the reasons why — and at the same time educate the — public/congress/the President/family/friends — about why.

But, I've written, re-written, added, subtracted, rearranged and mixed it up, and still can't get it to come out simple and powerful. Maybe I need to take my emotion out of it. I'm not sure, but I don't think the blog is going to be something I find myself posting to very often. Writing in my journal is more satisfying (I love the act of writing long-hand), and I don't have to worry about whether or not my audience understands it!

  1. Grammar, spelling, and punctuation are fairly overrated... and I'm a grammar/spelling/punctuation junkie (junky?). Granted, you're only three posts in, but thus far, I'm learning from your posts... you make me think!

    p.s. - I think we're overdue for O'Duffy's (or something similar).

  2. For someone who stuggles "with how to arrange words and thoughts into cohesive sentences," I think you've done a great job at it so far! But it made me laugh to read your realization: "It's very hard work!" And you didn't even mention time consuming. Now imagine a whole book...

If you can't manage to get your views and rants into perfectly articulated prose, I hope you'll continue to blog anyway. I love the pics you've used at the top of your blog, and I'd love to see more. I think it would be great if you'd show us what you see in Kalamazoo. Even if you just made a few little comments along with the pictures I think it could be pretty cool & a worthwhile endeavour.

  3. Thanks followers! Those are very encouraging comments!

You make me think too Flux! And O'Duffy's or something is definitely a must! We can take pictures for Hilarywho (and Alev in D.C. who's missing Kalamazoo)!

    Spell check helps somewhat. ;-)

And for Hilarywho, I've had great respect for the "work" for writing for awhile (since I've had to do press releases — for 9 years as of yesterday). Funny I should read your comments today. I have just the photo I want to take/share! I walked to work today (downtown) and went by the Ladies Library. I laughed out loud when I looked up and saw the gargoyle hand a HUGE icicle handing out if it's mouth! Got to get it tomorrow — they say it's going to warm up to 40 something for a few days. 40 Something is good!

Got to go catch Independent Lens — it's about Petey Green. Did you ever hear him growing up in the Detroit area Hilarywho?

Thanks again to you both for the encouragement.
